The Doughnut Cheeseburger and Rising Obesity in the US

Author: Alicia Verity

Michelle Obama is doing hula hoops at the White House to raise fitness awareness and in other corners of our country we have the creation of the Krispy Kreme doughnut cheeseburger complete with bacon that clocks in at 1,500 calories. According to reports 17,000 of these culinary nightmares were recently served at a fair in Massachusetts. We applaud the efforts of our first lady with the message to get moving or get fat, but is it any surprise we are fat and getting fatter with such bad eating habits?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conclude that the "American society has become ‘obesogenic' characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity.” In other words we eat too much and exercise too little.

Maybe some hard statistics will wake us up to the reality that in general we are heading in the wrong direction and the Krispy Kreme doughnut does not help. The past 20 years has shown a dramatic increase in obesity in the US according to the CDC. In 2008 Colorado was the leanest state with an 18.5% obesity rate and Mississippi reported the highest obesity rate at 32.8%. The CDC obesity statistics chart includes data by state.

2008 State Obesity Rates State % State % State % State % Alabama 31.4 Illinois 26.4 Montana 23.9 Rhode Island 21.5 Alaska 26.1 Indiana 26.3 Nebraska 26.6 South Carolina 30.1 Arizona 24.8 Iowa 26.0 Nevada 25.0 South Dakota 27.5 Arkansas 28.7 Kansas 27.4 New Hampshire 24.0 Tennessee 30.6 California 23.7 Kentucky 29.8 New Jersey 22.9 Texas 28.3 Colorado 18.5 Louisiana 28.3 New Mexico 25.2 Utah 22.5 Connecticut 21.0 Maine 25.2 New York 24.4 Vermont 22.7 Delaware 27.0 Maryland 26.0 North Carolina 29.0 Virginia 25.0 Washington DC 21.8 Massachusetts 20.9 North Dakota 27.1 Washington 25.4 Florida 24.4 Michigan 28.9 Ohio 28.7 West Virginia 31.2 Georgia 27.3 Minnesota 24.3 Oklahoma 30.3 Wisconsin 25.4 Hawaii 22.6 Mississippi 32.8 Oregon 24.2 Wyoming 24.6 Idaho 24.5 Missouri 28.5 Pennsylvania 27.7

From the study data collected by the CDC the prevalence of obesity is 51% higher for blacks and 21% higher for Hispanics as compared to whites. Greater prevalence of obesity for blacks and whites are found in the South and Midwest. Hispanics in the Northeast have lower obesity prevalence than Hispanics in the Midwest, South or West.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. An adult who has a BMI between 25—29.9 is considered overweight. An adult who has a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. BMI is calculated from weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Being overweight and obese can led to serious diet-related chronic diseases which include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke. Non-fatal health problems associated with obesity include respiratory difficulties including sleep apnea, chronic musculoskeletal problems, skin problems and infertility.

A person's body weight is the result of many factors including genes, metabolism, behavior, environment, culture and socioeconomic status. Generally speaking being overweight and obese is the result of an energy imbalance. Simply it involves eating too many calories and not burning enough calories through physical activity. Genetics and the environment may increase the risk of weight gain but behavior and personal choices play a big role in a person's weight.

What can we do? Eat a balanced calorie appropriate diet and cut out the nutritionally empty high caloric snacks. Reduce the time spent watching television and other sedentary behaviors such as video games. Build physical activity into regular routines. If you are maintaining your weight you should eat roughly the same number of calories that your body is using through body functions and physical activity. If you are trying to lose weight you should be eating fewer calories than your body is using. Your body will pull from its fat storage cells for energy so your weight will decrease.

Bariatric surgery is also known as weight loss surgery. The two most common procedures performed are gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding. Research has demonstrated these procedures result in significant long-term weight loss, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors and a reduction in mortality.

The increase in consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats such as the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger, combined with reduced physical activity has led us to the brink of this public health crisis. Being overweight or obese is unhealthy for individual Americans and our nation as a whole. Ask not what your country can do for you but rather how many hula hoops you can do for it in an effort to reduce our collective weight.

How to Lose Love Handles in 2 Weeks

Author: Jennifer Jolan

Here's how to lose love handles in 2 weeks. There's nothing hard or crazy about what I'm about to tell you. Just do it and you'll get rid of your love handles quickly. If you're really obese, I can't guarantee you that you'll completely lose your love handles, but you'll reduce their size a great deal in the 2 weeks.

1. Go buy yourself a hula hoop and use it 10 minutes everyday

A weighted hula hoop that's 36-42 inches is perfect for reducing your waist and love handles. Being weighted helps maintain it's rotations around your body. You'd think that if it ways more it'd fall down easier. It's actually the opposite.

A weighted hula hoop should cost you around $10.

Now here's the key to making this a regular part of your life and get the most out of it. Don't do all 10 minutes at once. Just use the hula hoop for 1-2 minutes. But do that often... 5-10 times a day.

You're probably thinking that "what, 5 times a day... that's too much". But it isn't. You don't need to schedule these. Just put the hula hoop in front of your living room tv.

When you have the tv on and a commercial comes on, you hula hoop. Simple.

2. 1-Minute Hindu Squats

I assume you're relatively busy and have a hard time fitting exercise into your schedule. That's where the brilliance of 1-minute hindu squats come in.

They're not the typical squat with weights to build muscle exercise. Instead, you only use your bodyweight. Nothing else. The key to making these work to burn off your love handles... going fast.

If you can get 20 or more done in a minute... that's great. You'll be burning off fat in no time.

Be sure to squat down far enough. For that, swipe your finger tips to the ground. Besides that, do these for 1 minute... 5-10 times a day. Again, commercials are a good time to do them.

That's a simple way on how to lose love handles in 2 weeks.

Depression or a Case of the Monday Blues

Author: Alicia Verity

The beginning of a new work week can cause a case of the blues for many people but according to recent research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 in 20 Americans over the age of 12 suffer from a clinical state of depression. 40-59 year old women have the highest rates. Poor people also report depression symptoms more than wealthier Americans. 80% of people with depression report they have some level of functional impairment because of depression and 27% report serious difficulty in work and home life as a result. Only 29% of people with depression seek out mental health professionals. Depression comes in many forms including:

 • Major depressive disorder
 • Post-partum depression
 • Seasonal affective disorder
 • Situational depression
 • Adjustment disorder
 • Bipolar (Manic Depressive) disorder

Depression is a mental state or a chronic mental disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, loneliness, despair, helplessness, low self-esteem and self-reproach. Other signs include psychomotor retardation, agitation, and withdrawal from social contact, insomnia, and decreased appetite. The symptoms can become severe enough to cause self harm or suicide (major depressive disorder). Anyone can be afflicted with depression at any time in their life. The comedian Jim Carey and the talk show host Larry King both reveal that they have fought depression during stages of their careers.

Post partum depression strikes women following the birth of a child. Brooke Shields wrote a book about her experience after the birth of her daughter Rowan called Down Came the Rain. This made a media sensation when fellow actor Tom Cruise criticized her for antidepressant use. This condition can be debilitating in the caring of a new infant and create barriers to the appropriate bonding with the child. Post partum depression looks like major depression except that it occurs right after delivery. This affects 1 woman in every 500 who have given birth. The symptoms can be severe enough to impair normal functioning and put the mother and baby's life at risk. Treatment should be sought immediately after symptoms arise.

Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that appears in winter and resolves in the spring. Patients experience depression and a general lack of energy. Light exposure is felt to be part of the cause and light is used in the treatment. This condition is more common in women. To learn more read the iTriagehealth.com Health Blog.

Situational depression is an episode of acute depression that results from a stressful life event such as a loss of a job, loss of a loved one or natural catastrophe. It is unclear why some people are affected and others are not. The symptoms can last for days or years. Adjustment disorder is an inability to adjust to the normal stressors of life resulting in significant emotional or behavioral symptoms and impairment of function in daily life.

A close condition to depression is bi-polar disorder or manic depression. People with bi-polar disorder experience the same symptoms as people with depression, but they will also experience manic highs or hyper manic episodes. This condition is characterized by mood instability and can be serious and disabling. Mania reveals itself in excessive excitability, reckless behavior, impulsive actions, excessive energy, restlessness and inability to sleep.

It is important for health care professionals to make the diagnostic distinction between straight depression and bi-polar disorder to ensure that patients receive the appropriate treatment as soon as possible. Patients need to help their therapists identify whether they are suffering from only depressive symptoms or if they have components of bi-polar disorder as well. A good professional will ask a patient if they are experiencing the opposite feelings of depression as well as depressive symptoms. Sometimes family members will supply important information by noticing excessive energy, reckless behavior or grandiose actions. The award-winning actress Glenn Close speaks out passionately about bipolar disorder because it has struck very close to home with her sister Jessie Close (view below). Because of her first hand experience with the cultural stigma against mental illness, Ms. Close has started a national anti-stigma campaign to change the publics perception of mental illness called Bring Change 2 mind.

The very nature of depression can prevent a person from seeking help. Denial is one reason people with depression do not receive treatment. Others do not seek treatment because they do not believe that they can be helped. There is still a stigma in our society surrounding mental illness and insurance coverage is spotty and this will prevent others from seeking care. The good news is that depression is a treatable condition. With appropriate treatment patients can return to their normal level of functioning.

The most affective way to help a depressed person is to assist them to seek treatment. This might involve helping make an appointment and going to the appointment with a qualified health care or mental health professional. This might also involve giving emotional support and encouraging the patient to stick with prescribed treatment until the symptoms begin to abate. Antidepressants and psychotherapy are the mainstays of treatment. Mental health professionals to seek out for treatment are psychiatrists and psychologists. Psychiatric hospitalizations may be needed for severe symptoms and for suicidal ideations.

Depression is not just an emotional state but a medical condition that needs appropriate treatment. When your feelings move beyond a case of the Monday morning blues, it is time to seek appropriate care.

Sexy Female Abs Exercises

Author: Jennifer Jolan

Here's how to get sexy female abs and look great in a bikini in just minutes a day away from the gym. What I'm about to tell you will give you that sexy feminine, shapely look that looks hot in a bikini.

1. Hula hooping

A cheap $3 hula hoop will be one of the best things you can get for sexy abs. It's quite simple, just twirl it around your waist for 10 minutes a day. It'll give you that soft, sexy belly dancer type of body that looks incredible in a bikini.

You don't need to do all 10 minutes in a row. What I do is this... I do 2 minutes at a time during tv commercials. Simple!

2. Walk on an incline

Walking on a flat surface sucks if you want to lose weight fast, but walking on an incline works great. It's like night and day as far as weight loss results go.

All you do is incline a treadmill to 10-15 degree incline and walk on it for 15-20 minutes a day, 4-6 days a week. Nothing more. If you don't have access to a treadmill, find a hill you can walk up. These incline walks work great because they create such a massive oxygen deficit in your body.

This forces your body to scavenge your bodyfat and burn it up for quick energy.

3. Do belly rubs

Belly rubs work great for destroying belly fat. What you do is lie down and rub your hands together for 15 seconds to create heat/energy. Then you rub 1 hand in small circles around your belly button for 30-45 seconds. Do this for 3-5 minutes a day.

The heat from your hand penetrates through your skin and attacks the fat cells in your abs. They either disintegrate or loosen up and get flushed out of your body. Some fat cells are more stubborn than others, so don't expect to burn off all of them quickly.

That's how you can get sexy female abs and look great in a bikini in just minutes a day without wasting your time on stupid things like jogging and sit ups.

Exercise Programs for Women - The Best Home Workouts for the Femme Fatale

Author: Lyndsay Earle

Femme fatale: "A women who is considered to be dangerously seductive." It's every woman's dream to be one, like the character played by Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Sexy, fit, mentally and emotionally tough, ready to chase and shoot anytime.

Take away the pouting lips and the chasing and the shooting, every woman aspires to be sexy, fit and be mentally and emotionally tough. Sadly, though, the demands of modern living, the financial realities and the stresses of work have put the road to being a femme fatale—exercise diva on the back burner.

This does not have to be the case, however. You don't need to invest in gym membership or buy designer workout clothes (which become a necessity with gym membership) to stay fit. All you need is determination, motivation and the will-to-succeed. And of course, a consistent home workout schedule.

For women, one of the easiest exercises that you can do at home is wall squats. With your back firmly against the wall, slide down slowly and squat. You can repeat this as often as you can to workout your abs and thighs. Jumping jacks and/or skipping ropes are good cardiovascular workouts that you can do without expensive home fitness equipment.

Crunches are also excellent ab sculptors that you can incorporate into your home workout regimen. Doing hula hoops is one great exercise, too. It exercises you ab muscles while giving you loads of fun reminiscent of your childhood days. If there's a hill or an incline near your house (stairs will even do, you just have to be a tad more careful), you can do sprints to strengthen your thighs and legs. Start by sprinting for 50 yards and once you've built up your strength and endurance, you can gradually increase it by increments of 10 yards. But do no more than a 1000 yard sprints in one day and make sure that you warm up and stretch beforehand to prevent yourself from pulling a muscle or experiencing any other serious injuries.

For toned shoulders and sculpted arms, you can do chair push-ups. With a stable chair for support, lean forward in a push-up position, hold the chair and while standing on the tips of your toes, do your push-ups. Keep your back straight as much as you can and your face forward. This workout not only trims sagging arms, it also makes your breast look much larger (yep!) by strengthening your chest muscles.

Other home workouts that give you the killer bod you desire include curls with the milk or water bottles. An early-morning or late-night brisk walk around your neighborhood is also a good cardiovascular workout. If you have a bike, cycling around the neighborhood is also one cool way to get that hot body you've been aiming for.

If you're a mom, staying at home with the kids can be turned into one fun exercise regimen. You can chase them around and get a good cardiovascular workout in the process. If you're a single woman living with your dog, you can walk or jog or play fetch with your pooch and achieve the great body you want.

Having a femme fatale body is a not as hard as you initially think. A little creativity, common sense, lots of enthusiasm and of course, an exercise regimen, are really all you need.

Generational Cycles – Toy Fads

Author: blackswan

With each generation new toys become popular in a rush and then vanish to the backs of memories and dusty toyshop shelves. The surge usually begins around Christmas when parents are searching for stocking fillers. The toys are usually original, simple and fun. Often the toys reflect a new leap in science – the hula hoop has been around for thousands of years, but it was when the first plastic hoops were released in 1958 that there was a massive surge in demand for them. Similarly the Tamagotchi was the first electronic device owned by many children of the 1990s (if you forget digital watches).

Chart of generational toys

Sometimes a company will try to bring one back, as was attempted with the Trolls or Clackers of the mind 1960s. They were both reintroduced in the early 1990s (when the children who had first played with them were raising their own children) and enjoyed abrief period of popularity, but they are never as popular as they were the first time, when the parents were often as excited and fascinated as the children.

Readers with a keen eye for new investment opportunities will notice that, as yet, the latest – can we call them Generation Z? – cohort of youngsters has not yet been given their turn at a toy they will look back on in years to come and think to themselves, ‘ah, those were the good old days'. What do you think would make the perfect fad toy for the new ‘Artist' generation? For someone brought up with a pet rock, I can only hope the emotional scars don't run quite so deeply this time around.
